What is Dincharya?
Dincharya (दिनचर्या) literally means "daily routine" in Sanskrit. Rooted in both Ayurveda and Vedic tradition, Dincharya is a systematic daily schedule prescribed by the *rishis* (sages) to keep the body, mind, and spirit in optimal harmony. Charaka — the father of Ayurveda — dedicates an entire chapter of the Charaka Samhita to Dincharya.
The Sacred Morning Routine
Step 1: Brahma Muhurta (4:00 AM – 5:30 AM) — Wake Up in Divine Time The period 1.5 hours before sunrise is called Brahma Muhurta — literally the "Creator's Hour." The atmosphere is sattvik (pure), the mind is fresh, and the prana (life force) in nature is at its peak. Ancient texts prescribe this time for meditation, study, and prayer. Morning routines begun at this hour are 3x more effective than those started later.
Step 2: Uchhara (Prayer Upon Waking) Upon opening your eyes, look at your palms and recite: *"Karagre vasate Lakshmi, kara madhye Saraswati, kara mule tu Govinda, prabhate kar darshanam"* (At the fingertips resides Lakshmi, in the middle Saraswati, at the base Govinda — behold your palms in the morning.)
Step 3: Touch the Earth with Gratitude Before placing your feet on the ground, touch the floor and say: *"Samudravasane devi, parvatastana mandale, Vishnupatni namastubhyam, padasparsham kshamasva me"* (O Mother Earth, dressed in the ocean, with mountains as your bosom, wife of Vishnu — please forgive me for touching you with my feet.)
Step 4: Elimination and Personal Hygiene (5:00 – 5:30 AM) Ayurveda recommends: - Copper tongue scraping (to remove toxins from overnight) - Oil pulling (*gandusha*) with sesame or coconut oil for 5-10 minutes - Nasya (2-3 drops of sesame oil in each nostril) - Abhyanga (self-massage with warm sesame oil before bathing)
Step 5: Yoga & Pranayama (6:00 – 7:00 AM) The morning asana practice should include: 1. **Surya Namaskar** (Sun Salutations) — 12 rounds: activates all 72,000 nadis (energy channels) 2. **Pranayama**: Anulom Vilom (alternate nostril breathing), Kapalbhati, Bhramari 3. **Core asanas**: Trikonasana, Virabhadrasana, Sarvangasana
Step 6: Morning Puja (7:00 – 7:30 AM) The daily worship ritual includes: - Lighting a diya (lamp) — fire represents the divine consciousness - Offering water to Tulsi plant - Chanting the Gayatri Mantra (108 times if possible): *"Om Bhur Bhuva Swaha..."* - Reading a passage from Bhagavad Gita or other scriptures
Step 7: Satvik Breakfast (8:00 AM) Ayurveda recommends a light, warm, easily digestible breakfast: - Warm water with lemon and honey - Fresh fruits (seasonal) - Cooked grains (poha, upma, khichdi) - Herbal teas (tulsi, ginger, ashwagandha) Avoid cold foods, processed items, and heavy non-vegetarian food in the morning.
