What is Om (ॐ)?
Om (also written as Aum) is the most sacred syllable in Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism. It is considered the primordial sound — the first vibration from which all creation emerged. The Mandukya Upanishad declares, *"Om ityetad aksharam idam sarvam"* — "Om, this syllable, is all this (universe)."
The Three Sounds: A-U-M
Om is composed of three sounds: - **A (अ)** — represents the waking state (Jagrit Avastha) and the physical world - **U (उ)** — represents the dream state (Swapna Avastha) and the subtle world - **M (म)** — represents the deep sleep state (Sushupti Avastha) and the causal world
The fourth element — the silence after Om — represents Turiya, the state of pure consciousness beyond all three.
Scientific Basis of Om
Modern science has confirmed what the Vedas knew millennia ago: chanting Om produces a vibration of approximately **136.1 Hz**, which matches the frequency of Earth's orbit around the Sun — known as the "Om frequency" or "OM pitch."
Research from the National Brain Research Centre (NBRC) in India has shown that chanting Om: - Activates the vagus nerve, reducing anxiety - Deactivates the limbic system (responsible for fear and stress) - Creates synchronised gamma brain waves (associated with heightened awareness) - Shows visible changes in brain scans similar to deep meditation
Spiritual Significance
In the Bhagavad Gita (Chapter 17), Lord Krishna declares: *"Om Tat Sat iti nirdesho Brahmanah trividhah smritah"* — Om, Tat, Sat are the three-fold designations of the Absolute Truth (Brahman).
Patanjali's Yoga Sutras (1.27-28) state: *"Tasya vachakah pranavah. Tajjapas tadartha bhavanam"* — "The word representing Him (Ishvara) is Om. And its repetition brings understanding of its meaning."
How to Chant Om Correctly
- Sit in a comfortable meditation posture (Sukhasana or Padmasana)
- Take a deep breath in
- Exhale slowly while chanting A-U-M
- Let the 'M' reverberate as a hum (**mmm**) and feel it in your chest and skull
- Rest in silence for a moment before the next breath
- Repeat 3, 7, 21, or 108 times as per tradition
Om in Daily Life
- Begin your day with 3 rounds of Om chanting to set a positive vibration
- Chant Om before meals, as taught in Vedic tradition
- Om is the prefix of all sacred Vedic mantras (Om Namah Shivaya, Om Namo Narayana, etc.)
- The sacred symbol ॐ can be placed in your home's pooja room facing East
